Jonathan and Derek are both connected with Wirksworth Derbyshire. Derek grew up and lived in Wirksworth for many years but is now living in Sheffield. Jonathan has lived in Wirksworth for a number of years and they have been good friends for a long time.

The name Fretwirk was invented by Derek and Jonathan in order to connect the town and their guitar playing.

They both began their studies with the late Robin Pearson principal of the Spanish Guitar Centre Nottingham.

Jonathan is a teacher of the classical guitar and works both privately and in schools. He studied with Carlos Bonell and gives recitals with other instrumentalists including the 'Mercia' Quartet..

Derek studied at the Guildhall School of Music in London and has a wealth of performing experience working in Jazz groups ,theatre and on solo guitar. Derek is also a guitar teacher working in schools and privately.
